Welcome to Jules' world.................
Being a mum!

Being a mum!

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray my sanity to keep.
For if some peace I do not find,
I'm pretty sure I'll lose my mind.

I pray I find a little quiet
Far from the daily family riot
May I lie back--not have to think
about what they're stuffing down the sink,
or who they're with, or where they're at
and what they're doing to the cat.

I pray for time all to myself
(did something just fall off a shelf?)
To cuddle in my nice, soft bed
(Oh no, another goldfish--dead!)

Some silent moments for goodness sake
(Did I just hear a window break?)
And that I need not cook or clean--
(well heck, I've got the right to dream)

Yes now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray my wits about me keep,
But as I look around I know--
I must have lost them long ago!

Post natal depression

If you have suffered from Post Natal Depression (PND) in the past, you know what a debilitating illness it can be. PND can affect mums, in many different ways, and at different times. My own personal experience of PND, started 9 months after the birth of my daughter 9 years ago. I never got help, and so the depression got steadily worse, until after having my son, 5 years ago, I was near suicidal. My doctor diagnosed PND, and I started a course of anti-depressant tablets, which I took right up until I fell pregnant with my 3rd child, and then once again after his birth 2 years ago. Anti-depressants worked for me, that dosen't mean they are a "quick fix" remedy, other forms of treatment are out there:

  • Anti-Depressants
  • Counselling
  • Herbal remedies (such as St.Johns Wort)

The best advice, is to see your doctor ASAP!  He/She will talk to you, and suggest the best form of treatment available for you personally. PND can manifest itself in a number of ways, and if you feel as if you need help, don't feel ashamed, or feel as if your not a good mum. Getting help, proves your a good mum that knows you have a temporary problem and is willing to "fix" it.

Symptoms of PND can include:

  • Appetite Change
  • Confusion
  • Crying spells
  • Feeling afraid
  • Feeling angry
  • Feeling tired
  • Mood swing

there are many other symptoms, and you may have some or all......The important thing is to get help!

Looking after YOU!

There are plenty of baby sites out on the internet, that can provide you with more detailed information, than I personally can provide (see the links section to the right!), what matters above all, is YOU! If you feel good, then that feeling is passed on to your children. I know it's easier said than done, but try and make time for YOU! What do you enjoy doing? Do it! What's stopping you? OK getting a babysitter can be a problem, and financial constraints, can limit exactly what you want to do, but a bubble bath is free, the library is free, taking a walk in the sunshine is free, listening to your music is free....you get the picture! I enjoy reading, so when my 2 year old is at playschool, or taking a nap, I use that time as MY time, I read a book, visit a cafe, take a walk...anything but tackle the housework! When the kids were babies, I used to love night times, the kids went to bed at 7pm, (I got a great routine going) and then I relaxed, watched TV or a video, read a book, had a fabulously loooong bath......I like to think of myself as a jug of liquid.....(bear with me here! lol!).....all day I pour a little of my liquid away, making dinner, helping with homework, cleaning, stopping arguments, shopping, etc...so when night time comes, my jug needs refilling or else the next day I won't have anything else to give, so I replenish my jug with things for me, and then the next day I can give again! Sounds barmy I know, but if you don't look after yourself, what use will you be to anyone? Relax, chill out, be selfish once in a while, YOU deserve it! :)
